Maritime Law

Our firm's reputation for expertise in the maritime and admiralty practice area is well established. Since its foundation fifty years ago our firm has represented and rendered legal services to clients, located in the United States and abroad, engaged in all aspects of the international shipping industry; including shipowners, operators, charterers, insurance underwriters, ship chandlers, bunker suppliers, freight forwarders, shippers and cargo owners. Through its long association with and involvement in the shipping business our attorneys are able to evaluate, give effective, sound advice on and handle the myriad problems arising in that business, be they legal, commercial, operational or financial.

Our experience in servicing the international shipping community extends to and includes the following areas: contracts for newbuildings, repairs, conversions and for the sale and purchase of secondhand vessels and associated documentation and related financing; vessel registrations and mortgages under the laws of all principal maritime jurisdictions and flag states; contracts for the carriage of goods by sea, including charterparties, bills of lading and contracts of affreightment; ship management, agency, pooling and crewing agreements; marine insurance, joint shipping ventures.

Our attorneys have extensive experience in the litigation and arbitration of a broad range of maritime claims and disputes in state and federal courts and before the Society of Maritime Arbitrators and the American Arbitration Association. Our maritime related litigation and arbitration includes disputes and claims arising out of charterparties, bills of lading and the carriage of goods by sea; vessel casualties, salvage and general average; marine insurance; ship repair, construction and sale and purchase contracts; arrest and attachment of vessels, bunkers and other property for the enforcement of maritime liens; pollution and environmental matters.

General Corporate and Commercial

Over our fifty year history our firm has provided and continues today to provide a variety of non-maritime legal services.

We advise on and establish companies, corporations, trusts and other business organizations, domestic and foreign, and give general advice on corporate structures and legal obligations. We prepare partnership and shareholder agreements, share subscription, stock purchase and asset purchase agreements and joint venture agreements.

Our firm has represented clients in residential and commercial real estate, co-operative apartment and condominium sale, purchase, leasing and mortgage financing transactions.

Our firm acted as special corporate and maritime counsel to TBS Shipping International Ltd. in connection with the issuance of its $110 million ship mortgage notes to financial institutions under Rule 144 A in May, 1998 and again in connection with the February, 2001 restructuring of those notes.

Our firm is experienced in the litigation of general civil and commercial matters in state and federal courts and in appeals at all levels. Our attorneys have handled a variety of cases and have represented clients, in government contract disputes, employment matters, shareholder disputes, environmental claims, real estate transactions, claims arising under commercial loan transactions and other contract and tort claims.
